Tenant Rights Quick Guide

Key rights every UK private renter should know.

Quiet Enjoyment

You have the right to live in your home without interference from your landlord. They cannot enter without permission (usually 24 hours written notice) unless it is an emergency.

Deposit Protection

Your deposit must be protected in a government-approved scheme within 30 days of payment. You must receive prescribed information about where it is held.

Repairs & Safety

The landlord is responsible for structural repairs, gas safety, and ensuring electrical installations are safe. You must have a valid Gas Safety Certificate renewed annually.

Protection from Eviction

You cannot be evicted without a valid legal notice (Section 21 or Section 8) and a court order. Harassment or illegal eviction is a criminal offence.
